Our Services

9-1-1 Response

If this is an emergency, please call 9-1-1 immediately

The Arlington-Falls Church Volunteer Rescue Squad provides a Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulance to the residents of Arlington County and the City of Falls Church on weekends and for special events and sporting events. We respond to medical emergency and injury calls in order to assist the Arlington County Fire Department (ACFD) with the day-to-day "routine" emergencies and ambulance transport requirements.

Our response and presence on-scene as the only BLS transport unit allows Arlington County Fire Department fire engines to return to service, while the ability of our volunteer EMTs to provide definitive care for and transport of patients with injuries of lesser severity frees Arlington's paramedics to respond to more advanced life support events; this allows those units to better serve the citizens of Arlington County and the City of Falls Church in the capacity for which they were designed.

The Rescue Squad generally operates the ambulance from Friday evening until Sunday morning, staffed entirely by volunteer EMTs. The ambulance is dispatched and functions as a unit of the Arlington County Fire Department. We are currently assigned to Fire Station 2 in the Ballston neighborhood of Arlington, but we can operate from any one of the ten County fire stations as needed. As a result, our unit routinely responds to emergencies almost anywhere in the County and the City of Falls Church.

Some of the neighborhoods we serve include: Arlington Heights, Ballston, Barcroft, Bluemont, Cherrydale, Clarendon, Courthouse, Dominion Hills, East Falls Church, Forest Glen, Glencarlyn, Lyon Village, Maywood, Virginia Square, Waycroft-Woodlawn, Westover, Williamsburg and Yorktown.

Support for Special Events

The Arlington-Falls Church Volunteer Rescue Squad is often called upon to provide emergency medical service coverage to gatherings, festivals, sporting events, and other special events. The Rescue Squad works with the Arlington County Fire Department and other local emergency responders to ensure these events receive the best possible medical coverage.

During special events, the Rescue Squad provides a dedicated ambulance with a full crew, and often augments this coverage with one or more EMS Bike Teams. The EMS Bike Teams can maneuver quickly through crowds to provide rapid care to sick and injured spectators or event participants.

The Squad regularly provides EMS coverage to the following special events:

  • Independence Day gatherings along the George Washington Parkway
  • The Marine Corps Marathon
  • The Army Ten Miler
  • A Taste of Arlington
  • Neighborhood Block Parties
  • Parades
  • Cycling Races
  • Local High School Athletic Events
